Emma

Someone very special went to heaven today. Aunt Emma was 92 and lived a very happy life. She was like a grandma to Eric, his siblings and the rest of us. We'll remember her forever for her kindness, independence, free spirit, and love for her family.

Plus she made the best semmels (bread rolls) and enjoyed baking tons of them for all our family over the years. Here is her recipe:

  • 2 tsp yeast
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • about 1/2 cup warm water
  • 2 cups warm water
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp poppy seeds
  • 5-6 cups flour

Dissolve yeast and sugar in about 1/2 cup warm water. Pour 2 cups of water in a large bowl. Add salt, poppy seeds and after about 10-15 mn the yeast. Add 3 cups of flour, stir, add another cup, stir, add about 1/2 cup, stir, 1/ cup and stir. The dough should not be too sticky. Stir vigorously. Let rise until doubled. Bake for 15 mn in a 450 degree F oven. Makes about 29 semmels.

As Alex so cleverly said, we can continue to talk to her through our dreams. Not sure how the semmel delivery system is going to work now... I'm sure she is still baking where she is.

Chinese New Year

We started to celebrate Chinese New Year a little bit in advance with other adoptive families. Both Alex and Sophie loves to party and had a great time doing crafts, watching the show - especially the lion dance, and eating great food. Better yet: going to sleep way after their usual bed time.

Things to do in January

This January is certainly not as unseasonally warm as last year. The kids are staying occupied with school and other activities. Check it out!

Happy Birthday, Alex!

Alex celebrated his 6th birthday four times between family, friends and school. He is our party-boy for sure!

This year he asked papa to bake him a Dodge Viper cake and had very specific instructions: purple car with orange windows and lights, red stripes, and he wanted to see the exhaust pipe. Papa came through this year again with an amazing butter cake made from scratch. Lucky boy!

Papa found my favorite car on E-bay: a Bugatti! Yeah!!!
